Preparation for application of hair extensions
Before the appointment please prepare your hair by:
- On the day, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, paying attention to the roots. (If you do not have a clarifying shampoo, you can use a small amount of washing up liquid instead).
- Do not use conditioner at the root. Be careful to apply the conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tip only, if it is used.
- Do not use any other hair products on your hair.
- If your hair is curly or wavy naturally, then please straighten your hair

Washing
- Hair
is not to be washed for 48 hours after the bonds are applied. (This does
not apply to the micro-ring method). The bonds need time to fully harden.
- It
is best to wash your hair in a standing position; do not bend your head over a
bath to wash it.
- You may use your normal shampoo and conditioner, although it is advised that you do not put conditioner on the bonds, as over time this will degrade the bonds, and the hair will shed. Instead, apply conditioner from the mid lengths down to the tip, and on the upper T-bar area where there are no bonds, but just your own hair. (Specially formulated hair extension shampoo and conditioner is available. These are worthwhile products to use, but are not compulsory).
- If you attend the hairdresser, do not allow them to use the rotary motion - to scrub the hair at the scalp. This could lead to twisting or matting or the hair. Hair can be washed in a downward, root to tip motion.
Styling
- You
can treat the hair as if it is your own hair. It can be straightened,
curled, cut, and blow dried.
- When
straightening, you have to avoid straightening over the bonds although you will
probably find that this part of your hair is missed anyway due to it being so
close to the scalp. The heat of the hair straighteners or curling tongs would
degrade, or melt, the bond.
- The use of serum at the ends of the hair is recommended, to keep the ends silky. A serum that contains silicone is the best - like Frizz-ease serum or Redken No 1.
Dyeing
- You
can dye the hair but if you carry out a strand test first, you’ll be sure that
both your hair and the new hair respond similarly to the dye and so the result
will be natural.
- However,
if you have blonde highlights, for example, you can easily dye your roots while
extensions are in. The T-bar hair is free of bonds, allowing a root touch up.
Brushing
- When
brushing extensions it is best to use a hair extension brush, as this can
be used when brushing over the bonds. I will show you what this brush
looks like – you can get them in Boots or Superdrug. Or I supply them for sale also.
- A
hard brush, or those with balls at the end of the bristles are not
suitable for hair extensions.
Please do not brush over the bonds with these brushes, as you are
risking damaging your hair.
- When
brushing your hair, be gentle.
Hold the hair in one hand and start by brushing the ends out
first. Then move to brushing from
the mid-lengths down. Finally you can gently brush out from the roots
At Night
- With
long, thick hair to manage, it is a good idea to wear your hair in a loose
plait at night.
In the morning
- In
the morning, it is a good idea to run your fingers between the bonds, to
keep them separate from one another.
Notes on microrings and reapplication
We can remove the microring hair extentions and re-use them. Take care of them and they will last you for 8 months!
Notes on Removal
I can guarantee that I will remove the bonds carefully and professionally. I have professional products that allow me to care for my clients own hair. The microrings need to be removed with a special tool. And the bonds require special remover. This remover breaks down the bonds, leaving them flaky - they disintegrate in powder that can be gently brushed out. |
